The Myth of Lifelong Learning? Here’s My Story
I’ve always heard the term “lifelong learner” tossed around, and I think it sums up my journey well.
From the moment I stepped into the world of IT, it was clear that staying relevant meant staying curious. Pushing boundaries, picking up new skills, and staying open to change have been my constants on this roller-coaster ride of about 3 decades.
Curious Learner:
In an industry where change is the only constant, it is almost a rule to pick up at least one certification every two years. After more than three decades in this fast-paced field, my curiosity hasn’t waned one bit. New technology on the horizon? I am in! Be it a book, an article, or even a YouTube video or podcast, I am diving in.
That desire to keep learning and connecting with top minds in the field, to validate my ideas and responsibilities as the head of IT, led me to explore new qualifications. That’s when the Master of Data Science (Global) caught my eye. This online course is designed for working professionals, offered by Great Learning in partnership with University of Texas, Austin and Deakin University.
Why Data Science?
Apart from it being dubbed the “sexiest career,” it is also a natural extension of what I do. Data analytics has always fascinated me. In my role as VP of Information Systems, I design and deploy business analytics solutions, drawing from global data sources (even ones like the World Trade Organization).
And the credit goes to:
A few close friends and family nudged me to take on this challenge—especially my daughter, who is pursuing data science and economics degree at University of Southern California. Supported by my entrepreneur wife and cheered on by my son, currently in his IB year, I took the plunge.
My gratitude also goes to my organization and senior leaders for backing me up and financing this adventure.
Journey so far…
It has been a year since I started this journey in October 2023, and I am happy with how much I have learned and grown. Great Learning’s program has been rigorous but rewarding, with the faculty and support team understanding the unique challenges of balancing work, studies, and travel. Without their patience and flexibility, getting through this would have been tough.
A big shout-out to Faculties Raja R, Yogesh Singh, Olabode James and Program managers Ishan Sharma, Bhumika Arora for their invaluable guidance and support throughout the year. I have built some great connections along the way, and I hope they are here to stay.
So far, it has been a smooth and rewarding ride, and I am excited to see what’s next on this road ahead.
Case for continuous learning:
As a technology enthusiast with a penchant for bird photography, gaming, and spending quality time with family, I believe that continuous learning adds depth and excitement to life. Whether it’s adjusting camera settings for that perfect bird shot or strategizing my next gaming move, I realized that both tech and life-long learning need the same thing: curiosity and a bit of daring to explore the unknown.
To anyone out there considering a similar journey—whether you are deep into your career or just starting—take the plunge! Invest time in upgrading your skills. Lifelong learning isn’t just a buzzword; it is a way to keep the fire alive.
